"Where do all these DESIGNS go - into UNSOLD COMPAQ SERVERS?"

No... they go into high-end supercomputers and high-end
multi-processor boxes. The Europeans must have had
quite a few RFPs come their way... I mean if you are
going to spend 30-100 million on a SuperComputer you do
have a tendency to shop around. I am sure Compaq's
proposal included current (in that time frame) parts
for the SC (EV68s) and future CPUs (EV7 is a great
engineering feat with on-chip Network controller and
on-chip Memory Controller) that they were satisfied they made the right choice.

Maybe Intel and partners will ship high-end McKinley
boxes someday that folks will be interested in.
