Pallisard, Mooter, et.al.: Indeed, that article on Knight is quite insightful. And it allows some things I've experienced to come "full circle". How so? Well, waaaay back in about '94(or so), I had the great opportunity to work with one of the first CLEC's trying to crack open the NYC market for local business phone service. As such the network facilities planners had found a place to install our first two local network switches. The place found just happened to be in the Exchange Place area of Jersey City. For those who don't know anything about Jersey City, think of the World Trade Center Towers. From that point go due west across the Hudson River. On the western edge of the Hudson river is the Exchange Place area of Jersey City. The local politico's of Jersey City were in the "taxiing" stages of revitalization of the area, and their new mayor, a Harvard educated former Wall Streeter by the name of Bret Schundler, had managed to shove forward some plans that'd lain on planning boards for a goodly amount of time. Part of the plans involved "sweet talking" a lot of the back-office processing "stuff" of Wall Street, luring them via tax breaks, etc., to come across the river to the Exchange Place area(much to the consternation, I'm sure, of the politico's of NYC). And it worked as Jersey City is now flat ass BOOMING! You might say they've gone from taxiing to take off. Indeed, it's now considered a primo "gold coast" area. Anyway, we put not only our first two local switches there, but also had several sales offices there as well. From this vantage point my company launched its battle with then NYNEX. And as is always the way of such things the stress level for everyone shot through the roof. So much so we'd started a habit of hanging in the local Exchange pub's after work on Fridays, ostensibly to blow off steam. There you'd get the opportunity to over-hear a variety of conversations, not the least of which were the conversations of some of the financial folk who manned the trading terminals of such as Knight, et.al.. Let me tell you, some of the things over-heard....well....let's just say it was clear they were into maximum focus on "getting over" on each other and the lay public when it came to playing the game. As you might expect, for such as meself, a person who's made a "hobby" of this game, there were some eye-opening conversations over-heard. So the article doesn't really surprise me. Now, speaking of surprises...let's see how VLNC performs this week. John~
