Why not? Pretty close to the surface, one of the first things a right-handed killer would hit, if slashing from behind. Given the location of the other wounds--back and neck--that seems a likely approach.

His left hand, then, would have been covered with blood, very likely: it seems improbably that he hadn't touched her till then. She'd at that point have been on the ground, he'd have had to lift her head, probably by the hair, to deliver the final blow. In that case there should have been a great deal of blood beneath her, something not reported by witnesses...

If he cut her throat after delivering the other blows, wouldn't the broken knife point have left a jagged cut? Jeff said long ago that Jim saw an autopsy photo that showed a clean, thin wound.
