Would you buy a business (and take it private) for a trillion dollars if it only brought in 10 billion a year? That's only a 1% return on your investment. Ooops, I guess that's an economic concept that might be foreign to you.

Michael:

I consider the market cap to be one of the numerous items to be evaluated. But, there sure have been many times someone has said a stock couldn't go "that high" because of the market cap, yet it did.

Michael,

Market cap is one of the few remaining methods to properly value a growth company. Obviously PE and PEG are much less reliable in today's world. I'm long JDSU and would agree that it has earned it's market cap based on it's growth and it's POTENTIAL for future growth. But there is no way that it has earned a place ahead of CISCO based on current information.

Remember, that even as JDSU grows at its tremendous pace, there will be many chances ahead for the company to meet it's potential or to falter. This uncertainty has to be built into the value of the company. CSCO has a longer track record of meeting or exceeding it's potential. This isn't to say that JDSU could never surpass CSCO in market cap, but that would be at least a few years off.
