Odds favor the kitchen knife as the tip will break easier than a utility knife.

I'm inclined to agree. And, yes, it's possible that Buddy could have taken a knife from the church kitchen. But it'd have been much easier to take one from his parents' kitchen, if he lived at home.

The first wound may have been through the back and to the heart. Is this possible with a five inch blade?

Technically, I think it would be, even from the back. But as I understand it, none of the 17 wounds was inflicted that low on Suzanne's torso.

Re: "Buddy"

I really have a hard time envisioning "Buddy" having anything to do with the murder for several reasons:

1. I can't envision a mentally retarded person stalking anyone
2. I can't envision Suzanne having a "secret" meeting with "Buddy" (i.e. not telling the two people that asked her that she was meeting anyone at all for that matter)
3. I can't envision Buddy hanging around Yale and just happening to run into Suzanne
4. I can't envision Buddy offering Suzanne a ride or driving her around
5. I can't envision a mentally retarded person either planning a murder or carrying a knife on them.

I'm not saying it's not possible he could have done it; I just don't see it as likely pending a good explanation for the above.
