Scientific-Atlanta To Boost Set-Top Production

ATLANTA (Dow Jones)--Scientific-Atlanta Inc. (SFA, news, msgs) will boost the production of digital interactive set-tops by 1 million units a quarter.

As reported Jan. 26, the company planned to boost quarterly production at the plant to 800,000 from 500,000 by June.

In a press release Wednesday, the company said the production increase is expected to begin at its Juarez, Mexico plant by July 1, following capacity improvements.

This past week the plant produced 49,000 set-tops.

The company added that its order backlog will support the shipment of about 1.2 million units in the second-half of the fiscal year ending June 30.

As reported Jan. 31, Scientific-Atlanta received a $90 million order from Adelphia Communications Inc. (ADLAC, news, msgs) for 300,000 digital set-tops.

The company also plans to outsource some circuit board production to meet any peaks in demand for the boards.

The company makes all of its digital interactive set-tops at the Juarez plant, as well as its RF amplifier product line and several smaller product lines.

Scientific-Atlanta provides broadband communications systems.

Shares of Scientific-Atlanta closed at 113 15/16, up 11 1/4 or 11%, on New York Stock Exchange volume of 953,400 shares. Average volume is 893,987.
