Tellabs announced today that Irish cable operator Princes Holdings Ltd., trading as Irish Multichannel, has signed a three-year contract with Tellabs for an integrated broadband voice and data service delivery solution. This will enable Irish Multichannel to supply telephony, Internet and business communications services over its hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) network to residential customers and small- to medium-sized businesses across Ireland. Under the terms of the contract ? estimated to be worth $20 million ? Irish Multichannel and Tellabs will work together to design services, plan network solutions, provide technical support, and implement Tellabs? managed CABLESPANR 2300 Universal Telephony Distribution system as a core component of the total solution. Tellabs will also provide Irish Multichannel with a suite of business support services, ranging from business consulting and planning, through network design and system configuration, to installation project management, training and ongoing technical support. ?We decided to work with Tellabs because of its proven track record in the cable industry, and its ability to deploy solutions quickly, providing us with a very short time to market,? said Bart Bonsall, chief executive officer of Irish Multichannel. ?Our decision was also influenced by Tellabs? broad range of support services and its strong presence in Ireland.? Irish Multichannel is Ireland?s second-largest cable operator. Its network passes 600,000 homes and serves 230,000 subscribers. Following the recent acquisition of Cable Management Ireland, the operator?s franchise area now includes the areas of Limerick and Cork, parts of County Dublin as well as large areas of the Irish Midlands and Northwest. Irish Multichannel will start rolling out its new services in the first quarter of 2000, and will upgrade its network with the Tellabs solution area-by-area over a period of three years. ?To date, Tellabs has deployed CABLESPAN equipment that can support up to 6 million customers worldwide and is the market leader among cable telephony solutions in Europe,? said Chris Royden, vice president, broadband access at Tellabs. ?Tellabs is committed to helping service providers enhance their networks and offer reliable services while quickly introducing new ones.? Princes Holdings Ltd (PHL), trading as Irish Multichannel, is jointly owned by the US company, Liberty Media (formerly TCI) and Independent News & Media PLC. It operates the second largest cable and MDS (Multipoint Distribution System) company in Ireland, providing basic and premium television services to over 230,000 customers throughout Ireland. Rapidly expanding its product portfolio, PHL is currently investing over 300 million Irish pounds (US$400 million) in its fiber-optic and wireless network backbone, and increasing its range of multimedia services to its existing customers to include the provision of both telephony and high-speed internet access. Tellabs designs, manufactures, markets and services data, voice and video transport, switching/routing and network access systems. The company?s products are used worldwide by providers of communications services. Tellabs stock is listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market (TLAB).
