I really haven't been following the LED market in the past, so I'm not sure which semiconductor materials were being used (I'd guess either a GaP or one of the Zn compounds). I did a quick search and it seems that most are now offering green LEDs based on some flavor of GaN. My guess is that these are more efficient.

Given that, I'm not sure why the production costs should be markedly different between the green and blue Leds. It could be that "green" leds are a lower quality version of the "blue" ones which could cause a price difference. At the HP/Agilent site I saw nearly a 4:1 price difference from white:green.

Any guess on the margin differences would be pure speculation without knowing something fundamental like yield differences or some key difference in the manufacturing process.

I know that doesn't really give you an answer but it's the best I can offer.
