Nokia joins 1X Plus camp

NANCY GOHRING

The battle over how to achieve faster data rates in CDMA networks is beginning to boil. Yesterday, Nokia said it will support Motorola?s new 1X Plus solution, which Motorola first introduced at the Wireless 2000 show last week. Nokia is expected to announce its allegiance some time next week.

So far Nokia and Motorola are pitted against Qualcomm and Lucent Technologies, which announced last week that it would work to standardize Qualcomm?s high data rate (HDR) solution. HDR is a Qualcomm solution that competes with Motorola?s 1X Plus. The biggest difference is that HDR requires operators to set aside a whole channel just for data while Motorola?s 1X Plus allows operators to offer data and voice from the same channel.

Motorola is encouraged by Nokia?s support. ?When you get a company like Nokia teamed up to bring this technology forward, you have a high chance of success,? said Neal Campbell, director of CDMA product marketing for Motorola.

Qualcomm is equally encouraged by Lucent?s support. ?We feel strongly about standardizing, and we?re happy to have Lucent supporting us,? said Kim Kleber, director of product marketing, HDR for Qualcomm.

Both Qualcomm and Motorola plan to take their technologies to standards bodies and both have been working with vendors and operators to get support and input.
