Dehydration is the physical condition that kills in diarrhea which is usually the result of an electrolyte imbalance. The life-saving treatment for kids in Africa is a package of glucose and salt (normal saline) that helps rehydrate them. It even seems to work with cholera in some instances. Also nice to have broad spectrum antibiotics that fight the toxic internal flora from which the body is trying to rid itself.
