One of the hallmarks of the "new economy" is the politicalization of economic data. One reason the CPI numbers are so obviously bogus is that the CPI was revised several years under heavy pressure from the financial community. The mantra then was that the CPI was overstating inflation.

The CPI may or may not have been overstating inflation then, but it sure is understating inflation now. But I do not notice any clamor from Wall Street to change the CPI again. An artificially depressed CPI screws social security recipients and many taxpayers, but who cares as long as Wall Street profits.

There was an item last night on CBC news about dry conditions in Western Canada - with strong likelyhood of early forest fires and a very dry summer.
