Safire has solid hate credentials. We believe you. But don't ask thinking people to follow him down that McCain/Nixon road again. Seems everyone but Safire knows that McCain wanted to speak before Bob Jones and that he was not going to denounce them. McCain's own SC campaign co-chair has said so. McCain's anti-Catholic smear/hate campaign came later, as a tactic that he has never backed away from, despite its losing ways. That's because McCain has no issues to run on, other than smearing his opponent.

Safire really can't be so stupid as he appears to be. His outrage over Bob Jones is manufactured for effect, surely. First, we know that McCain wanted to speak there and was not going to denounce them. Second, we know that the Catholic Church teaches that Mormonism is a cult and that all the Baptist. Moslems etc - everyone but Catholics - are going to Hell because they aren't Catholics. Where's Safire's call for everyone to denounce Catholic teachings? OK. So why is Safire playing to the ignorant? Because he wants the boobs to vote McCain, the genuine GOP hate candidate. Why? Who knows, perhaps its better for Safire that the GOP run a hater against AlGore, a charter hater.
