Morgan Stanley Int'l to invest US$300 million more on Taiwan bourse

Taipei, March 5, 2000 (CENS)--Taiwan's Securities & Futures Commission has given approval to the application of Morgan Stanley & Co. International Ltd. to invest an additional US$300 million on the local stock market, SFC officials announced on Friday.

The investment bank remitted a total of US$500 million in four separate installments into Taiwan for stock investments before March 1997. However, it has not applied to channel more equity funds into the island for nearly the past three years.

The second affiliate company, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter has applied to increase its stock investments on the local bourse, after Morgan Stanley Capital International announced late in 1999 that it would double, in three phases, the weighting of Taiwan shares on its key market indexes. The first phase is scheduled to be carried out in May this year.

The new investment was approved after Taiwan's central bank late last year raised the ceiling of the equity fund a qualified foreign institutional investor (QFII) could remit into Taiwan to US$1.2 billion from the original US$600 million.

Propelled by Taiwan's bright economic outlook, foreign investors as a whole bought a net of NT$330 billion worth of shares on the local bourse last year.

The amount of net-buy positions by QFIIs is expected to register a sharp increase this year, now that the ceiling of inward remittance for each GFIIs is doubled, SFC officials predicted.

Despite the recent downward correction on the local bourse, executives of most foreign securities investment firms in Taipei said they expected the main index to continue rising after the mid-March presidential election, reaching the 12,000-point level.

The weighted price index of the Taiwan Stock Exchange fell 70.06 points to close at 9517.97 on Saturday.

Stock watchdog approves US$7.88 billion foreign funds in 2 months

Taipei, March 5, 2000 (CENS)--The Securities & Futures Commission has given its approval to a total of 42 foreign equity investment applications to bringing an aggregate amount of US$7.88 billion equity funds into Taiwan's stock market during the January-February period, SFC officials said Friday.

Meanwhile, there is still US$4 billion in foreign funds pending the SFC's approval for getting into the local bourse, the officials said. The approved foreign funds and those still awaiting approval were both monthly record highs, they added.

The combined amount of those approved foreign funds and those still waiting for approval, totaling US$11.88 billion, would mean that some NT$360 billion worth of foreign funds are expected to pour into the local stock market in the coming months.

The SFC noted that the amount for a single foreign application was also on the rise, with a total of 12 applications exceeding US$300 million each.

Those large-size foreign funds include Templeton Developing Markets Trust, Templeton Emerging Markets Series, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Frank Russell Investment Co., State Street Bank & Trust Co., Emerging Market Growth Fund Inc., Jardine Fleming Investment Management International, and Europacific Growth Fund.

Foreign fund managers have been gradually increasing their portfolios of Taiwan shares after Morgan Stanley Capital International announced in November last year that it will raise the weighting of Taiwan stocks in its key market indexes, starting from May 2000, SFC officials said
