Network processors will go from 'obscurity' to $2.9 billion in 2004, says report

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--Network processors handling a range of chores in routers, switches and telecommunications gear will climb from "obscurity" and $128 million in sales last year to about $2.9 billion by 2004, predicted a new market report from Cahners In-Stat Group here.

The research organization said network processor revenues will increase at a compound annual growth rate of nearly 63% between 1999 and 2004.

"The next-generation networking hardware platforms must be able to prioritize and process data, voice, and video traffic at wire speed to be competitive in the expanding networking market," urged analyst Doug McEuen at In-Stat. "All networking core technology, from routers and Layer 3 Ethernet switches to ATM WAN and LAN switches, will require a network processor to effectively manage networking traffic."

The Internet explosion and the need for higher bandwidth in local and wide-area networks are fueling the growth of network processors. In-Stat's network processor report says routers and Layer 3 Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet switches will be the major driving force behind the rapid growth in revenues and unit shipments.
