Kanata, Ontario, March 6 (Bloomberg) -- Shares of Mitel Corp., a Canadian maker of office phone equipment and semiconductors, rose 14 percent after the company unveiled a new component that increases the amount of data that can be sent over office phone networks.

Shares of Mitel rose C$5.30 ($3.65) to C$42.30 in Toronto. Earlier they touched C$44.45, a 52-week high. In New York trading, shares rose 3 7/8, or 15 percent, to 29 1/2.

The company said the component connects to network parts made by Applied Micro Circuits Corp., Tyco International Ltd.'s electronics unit, and US Conec. The combination of devices increases the amount of data an office network can carry to as much as 2.5 gigabits of data per second over lengths of up to 300 meters, the company said.

Kanata, Ontario-based Mitel said it expects to have samples available for clients by July or August.

'To purpose of this is to meet the huge Internet-driven demand for bandwidth,' said Mitel spokeswoman Patti Dalby. 'These pipes will transmit huge amounts of data over very short distances at very high speeds within the central office.'

The components will sell for a base price of US$440 a pair, Mitel said.

In January, Mitel said its fiscal third-quarter profit from continuing operations rose to C$24.6 million, or C$0.21 a share, form a year-earlier C$19 million, or C$0.16. Revenue in the quarter ended Dec. 24 rose to C$368.8 million from C$344.1 million.

Mitel shares have risen 101 percent this year, compared to 63 percent for the Toronto Globe and Mail/Bloomberg Technology Index
