Lucent, Hitachi, Alcatel in fiber optics pact

BALTIMORE, March 7 (Reuters) - Japan's Hitachi Ltd. (NYSE:HIT - news) saidÿ
on Tuesday that it, Lucent Technologies Inc.
(NYSE:LU - news) and France's Alcatel (NYSE:ALA - news) had agreed on standards
for fiber-optic transceivers, components
which use some of the same parts to send and receive signals.

The company said in a statement that the standards would ``enable rapid growthÿ
in network bandwidth in the fiber optic market' by
establishing dimensions and common electrical interfaces, among other points.

The agreement specifies compatibility between devices with different features
and for future products.

Hitachi expects to begin business discussions with customers early in the third quarterÿ
for the devices. The plan includes a reduction in size by 80 percent
and power dissipation by 50 percent from Hitachi's current transceivers.

Hitachi released the statement from the Optical Fiber Communications Conferenceÿ
in Baltimore.
