Steve, they need a little gloat time. Mostly flatline since 1983 is pretty grim. According to Yahoo, they even split once!

Somebody tell them that Intel started shipping 1GHz chips to its partners a while back.

Maybe Intel should use a faster shipping service.

Steve - RE: "I haven't seen any AMD 1 Gig systems offered for sale yet. Vapourware from both vendors right now so the race is still on."

Jeez, Steve, why don't you check out the OEMs' site before you make that conclusion?

Steve -
re: The phrase "clutching at straws" comes to mind when AMD announces today that it "...would immediately begin shipping its chips to its two lead partners..."
I hold no AMD stock - I do hold a substantial amount of Intel. I don't think there is any comparison between the capabilities of the two companies.

But still, it seems like you are the one clutching at straws here. With CPQ doing first shipments day after tomorrow on the Athlon 1 GHz box, and no notion of when the announced OEM partners for the Intel 1GHz PIII will actually begin to ship, it seems that your statements about vapor chips are a little hard to defend. CPQ is not known as the quick turn-around manufacturer... it takes them many weeks to gear up for a consumer product production run. This is not all happening between now and Thursday...

edit: On closer examination it looks like CPQ has committed to "take orders" on March 9, and GTW likewise will "Take orders" on March 13th... perhaps reality is a bit harder to detect than it might first appear.

Still trying to find a Piii above 650Mhz in a retail store is a major feat in the Silicon Forest..but I can find AMD's over 700Mhz everywhere....

Pricewatch show a few(6) PIII 800 sites pricewatch.com

Whereas Athlon's have many.. Athlon 800 5 pages worth .
pricewatch.com

And Athlon 850Mhz has not equal on pricewath has 2 pages worth of listings pricewatch.com

Intel has allot of vapor products considering 800Mhz was launched in Dec 20th of 1999 and only showed up on PW in the last week or two.
