Paul, There may be shortages of several different types of components, whether this be flash or tantalum capacitors.

The ECM's appear to be having mixed results, perhaps due to the nature of the contracts they have outstanding. For example, I noticed SLR is down of late (I have followed it after they acquired my SMOD shares last year) as is Celestica, however Jabil is up big today.

In any case it may be useful to view removable flash memory solutions as the "currency" of the new digital age. Giving manufacturers the option to delete on-board flash storage from future product lines in favor of this "currency" is appealing. In this way the OEM's can be liberated from their dependence on flash memory for embedded data storage. Other markets for embedded memory (including code storage) will likely continue to flourish, but the intense consumer-driven demand will be for data storage applications.

I am happy to hear that Sony is promoting the Memory Stick so heavily that they are unable to meet demand. As Derek stated earlier this can only increase public acceptance of removable flash storage.

Wouldn't it be sweet if Sony ponied up some money to enlist SanDisk's help in bringing Memory Stick up to capacity? How about a licensing of technology from the Toshiba/SanDisk JV just to support Memory Stick products?

The possibilities seem limitless.
