Followup to the post I just sent in which I said either McCain or Gore would be the next President.

Just consider: The elder Bush won his first term on Reagan's coattails. Four years later he lost his re-election bid, despite the popularity he garnered for his handling of the Persian Gulf War, to a then obscure Governor of Arkansas with known ethical skeletons in his closet. The younger Bush is a lesser man compared to his father. Everything he is or has is derived from his status as GHWB's son. And he will be an even weaker candidate in the general election than his father was in 1992. He doesn't stand a chance.

I don't blame him for starting the negative ads.

If you hand your opponent an issue on a silver platter, he will exploit it, by fair means or foul. That's the nature of politics, and they all do it. Walking out of Bob Jones U. without making any reference to the institutional bigotry which prevails there was just plain stupid: he gave up the opportunity to present an appealing facade to a much wider base of moderate voters (and let's not kid ourselves, appealing facades are what it's all about) in order to pander to a small number of extremists. That's dumb. He stuck his face in the pie, and it's silly of him to complain when his opponent took the opportunity to rub it in.
