Who is your clearing firm. I'll call them and ask them if you have to cover before the close. All my trades clear throught Southwest and they don't allow it, but I did it on RAZF--but I covered before the end of the day too. If you hold overnite, when the short trade settles and buyer needs his/her shares in their account, at that time maybe they scramble to get you the borrow and they can transfer those shares to the buyer immediately. That would be the only explanation of how it works. However, if they still couldn't borrow the shares by settlement, somebody is in big trouble for not being able to fulfill the trade.
