Re: "EVEN if AMD had a better product (which they dont and any honest judge would agree to that) they do NOT have the capacity to produce enough to penetrate much farther into INTC field. Because the costs of FABS and equiping them is now ASTRONOMICAL I see NO WAY AMD or anyone else could present a serious challenge to INTC now or in the future. I have forgotten the total but I know INTC has something in the 40'S in the way of FABS ALL PAID FOR. AMD I believe has two maybe three NOT paid for"

AMD has 2 modern fabs while Intel has about 12 with several more coming online over the next 1-2 years.

AMD's Fab 30 in Dresden is a 6,000 wafer per week fab and @ 200 good die per wafer, just a guess, that's 62 Million potential Athlons from 1 fab alone. Not likely to happen but it does give you a perspective. Currently that $1.5 Billion Fab sits idle.

JDN,

AMD's the capacity to produce enough to penetrate much farther into INTC field

All the chips on the market are from the Austin fab. A new fab from Dresden is coming on line, which should more than double the capacity. There may be some issues that may delay the Dresden Fab, mainly readiness of the new copper process, yields of that new process, the fact that the Dresden fab is going to produce the next iteration of Athlon with full speed L2.

JDN - Re: "I have forgotten the total but I know INTC has something in the 40'S in the way of FABS ALL PAID FOR. AMD I believe has two maybe three NOT paid for. INTC could put them out of business ANY TIME they wished but for POLITICAL purposes they dont. They just give them enough crumbs to hang around. JDN"

Intel has many fabs, around 12 or 14, but currently only 5 of these have 0.18 micron Logic process capability, and 3 of these are still ramping up - the other two are further along.

Intel attempts to make and sell chip sets as well, while AMD uses outside foundries to make their 750 chip set. This gives AMD 2 full fabs to manufacture AthWipeys, although Dregs-den is not known to be in production.

Can Intel put AMD out of business - NO.

AMD will bring down prices as fast as Intel in a price war and absorb whatever losses required in order to maintain or increase market share. They have done this many times before.

Clearly, Gateway and Compaq have been pushed into the AMD camp due to manufacturing glitches and/or a screwed up marketing plans at Intel.

They will never return to an All-Intel house unless AMD screws up again big time.
