GV - Drew was looking at a MSFT press release last week - but the release refers to MSFT sales of shrink-wrapped Win2K at retail, not installations on OEM boxes, so we can not determine anything about DELL Win2K sales from that piece of information.

Drew also says "Dell is well positioned in the business segment to capitalize on this". DELL has (as usual) adopted the low cost highly leveraged model for their Win2K support. In discussions on this topic with DELL people at the Win2K launch, I was told that DELL selected a small number of desktops and laptops - the high volume commercial products - to test, certify and configure with Win2K. This reduced the amount of work they had to do on the front end, reduces their support costs since the support team does not have to cover more than a small number of products during the Win2K "shakeout", and still gives them the ability to hit most of the commercial market. Note for example that the fastest machines - like the Dimension XPS-B 800MHz box - are not available from DELL with Win2K. See dell.com

While this strategy fits with the way DELL does business and maximizes their return, it does not in my mind qualify as a leadership position on Win2K. If I were at DELL that's what I would do. But it does mean that DELL is less likely to see a Win2K pop, not more likely... they are betting on a relatively slow uptake of Win2K.
