They anticipate that they actually do have a premium line of GHz Athlons that will be available to certain OEM's in limited quantities. Intel will most likely have the same setup.

As far as the timing of the release, they obviously were in reactionary mode, i.e., caught wind of Intel's own 1GHz announcement and set their's accordingly.

Should Intel have went ahead and announced on Monday? I don't know. That's a Marketing issue, and I'll defer the debate on this issue to the thread for the most part. I do think AMD probably has more latitude to play around with their announcement dates than Intel due to their underdog status. I do know Intel's release date was set last month, and as far as I know, the release date did not change and has not changed since it was set.
