ALCATEL TO DEBUT BREAKTHROUGH OPTICAL TECHNOLOGY AT OFC 2000

ÿNew 40Gb/sec Technology Significantly Expands Bandwidth Capacity of Today's Optical Network

ÿBaltimore, March 7, 2000 - Answering the demand for Internet-based services andÿ
increased bandwidth, Alcatel today demonstrated an
ÿadvanced optical technology that dramatically increases the capacity of today's network.

ÿWith its Nx40Gb/s Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology,
being shown at the Optical Fiber Communications (OFC) show,
ÿMarch 7-9, Alcatel is demonstrating multi-bitrate, multi-wavelength and multi-spanÿ
transmission over a single fiber. Alcatel plans to conduct field
ÿtrials, both in the U.S. and Europe, of the technology in the second quarter of this year.ÿ

ÿThis Nx40Gb/s DWDM technology provides two key benefits in the optical core.
First, this advanced technology enables single-band
ÿtransmission of 1.6Tb/s per fiber, a doubling of network capacity. The current benchmarkÿ
for single-band transmission is 800Gb/s per fiber. The
ÿsecond benefit, which can be achieved in the future, is the optimization achievable by aÿ
fourfold increase in capacity switched through an
ÿall-optical cross-connect (OXC), switching wavelengths independent of bitrate.ÿ

ÿ"With its Nx40Gb/s innovation, Alcatel is delivering next-generation network solutionsÿ
that provide customers the capability to manage
ÿexponential growth in broadband traffic," said Paul Harrison, vice president, Transmission
and Optical Product Strategy, Alcatel. "This
ÿbreakthrough technology dramatically enhances spectral efficiency, creating greaterÿ
capacity to handle the Internet's explosive growth."

ÿ"We expect to see the 40Gb/s market starting its growth late 2001," said Voltaire Cacal,
a senior analyst for RHK, Inc. "It is very important for
ÿmanufacturers such as Alcatel to begin demonstrating such technological 40G/channel DWDM
capabilities as soon as possible. This will
ÿallow them to work closely with service providers early on so that technology introductionÿ
issues may be addressed much more quickly."

ÿAlcatel's expertise in optical transmission, including its integrated portfolio of terrestrial and
undersea networking solutions, as well as its
ÿadvanced optical components, position the company at the leading edge of the global marketplace.ÿ
Alcatel is a leading supplier of DWDM
ÿtechnology, and is building more than 40 optical fiber networks worldwide.

ÿAbout Alcatel
ÿAlcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end voice and dataÿ
communications solutions to established and new
ÿcarriers, as well as enterprises and consumers worldwide. With 120,000 employees andÿ
sales of EURO 23 billion in 1999, Alcatel operates in
ÿmore than 130 countries.ÿ
