A new FC library from ATL/Veritas that can backup up to 1.4 terabytes/hour, the P6000:
Quantum/ATL Introduces P6000 DLTtape-TM Library World's Largest Fibre Channel Library
Largest DLTtape Library Certified with VERITAS-R NetBackup-TM Software
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 7, 2000--Quantum/ATL, a Quantum Company (NYSE: DSS - news) and leading supplier of data protection systems for networked computers, Tuesday introduced its P6000 Series Library featuring internal Fibre Channel connectivity.
Designed specifically as a solution for consolidating secondary storage in a data center, the P6000 is highly available, highly scalable and delivers massive capacity plus performance.
VERITAS Software, a leading enterprise-class storage management software provider, Brocade Communications Systems Inc. (BROCADE©), the leading provider of Fibre Channel fabric switches, and Quantum/ATL worked together to certify the P6000, the largest DLTtape library ever certified with VERITAS NetBackup. The certified solution includes a P6000 configuration with 80 DLTtape drives, 1,630 DLTtape cartridges, and the same internal Fibre Channel connectivity introduced with the P3000 in September, 1999.
According to John Maxwell, director of data protection, product management, VERITAS Software, ``The certification of the P6000 with VERITAS NetBackup Shared Storage Option(TM) and Dynamic Drive Allocation option is an important milestone for our largest SAN users. They are asking for the ability to cost-effectively scale beyond one terabyte per hour backup and restore performance and 50 terabytes of capacity.'
Peter Tarrant, BROCADE vice president of marketing and business development, said, ``Fibre Channel-enabled tape libraries, such as the P6000, provide highly available, direct-attached data access for Fibre Channel-based storage area networks. The combination of BROCADE SilkWorm Fibre Channel fabric switches and Quantum/ATL's P6000 provides a powerful solution for our mutual customers.'
Solutions for consolidating storage are an important topic with Global 2000 corporations. Research from IDC indicates management of distributed storage consumes up to 55% of storage budgets. According to IDC, the cost of storage management can be reduced to 15% of the storage budget by consolidating storage. Senior IT professionals in Global 2000 corporations identified high availability, scalability and performance as the three attributes most important in consolidated storage solutions.
The P6000 answers the call for automation systems designed specifically for consolidated storage by delivering a powerful combination of high availability, scalability and performance:
High Availability for Non-Stop Data Access -
ATL's reliable P6000 and P3000 systems achieve the high availability needed for non-stop data access with the industry's only RAID-like system design including single-connector, hot-swap, user replaceable, DLTtape drive, power supply and fans modules. In addition, the P6000 and P3000 are the only DLTtape library systems that offer fully redundant power and cooling systems including AC controllers, power supplies and fans.
Scalability for Cost Effective Storage Consolidation -
The P6000 delivers the scalability needed for cost effective storage consolidation by allowing IT professionals to add availability, capacity and performance features if and when they need them. A base P6000 system features redundant, hot swap components, as well as up to 32 DLTtape drives and 652 DLTtape cartridges. The system then scales to 80 DLTtape drives and 1,630 cartridges. The P6000's unique PCI architecture provides the most cost-effective platform for keeping pace with changing SAN standards. When new standards or disruptive technologies emerge, the P6000 will scale by simply adding or changing PCI cards.
Performance to Support Large SAN Environments -
The P6000 provides the superior performance needed to service many servers in a Storage Area Network (SAN). With up to 80 DLTtape drives, a fully configured P6000 can back up and restore data at 1.4 terabytes per hour. Plus, with support for up to 15 embedded Fibre Channel interfaces, the P6000 has the massive bandwidth to ensure the full throughput of all 80 DLTtape drives servicing even the largest SANs.
A Complete Solution Certified with VERITAS Software -
The solution consisting of the P6000 and VERITAS NetBackup was certified in VERITAS Software and Quantum/ATL labs in Mountain View, Calif. and Irvine, respectively. The solution is fully supported by VERITAS Software and Quantum/ATL sales and support personnel around the globe.
