BALTIMORE, March 7 /PRNewswire/ - Qtera Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT), and leading developer of photonic networking systems for
the backbone of the Optical Internet, today announced the introduction of its ground-breaking, ultra-long-haul
photonic networking system - ULTRA. As the first to provide a 10Gbps backbone that breaks the 4000 km distance barrier without opto-electronic regeneration, Qtera ULTRA offers
backbone providers extremely low-cost bandwidth that is much easier to deploy. The ULTRA system, which has been trialed by leading long-haul service providers, is scheduled for volume shipments starting in 3Q00.

Qtera is providing a demonstration of the ULTRA photonic networking system, as well as its interoperability with high-performance IP routers, at the OFC 2000 conference and
tradeshow, taking place at the Baltimore Convention Center, March 7-9, Booth 2215. On the show floor,
Qtera will demonstrate an ULTRA system application transporting 56 Dense-Wavelength Division
Multiplexed (DWDM) channels, each operating at 10Gbps over 3600km of optical fiber. The intreroperability
demonstration will show the Nortel Networks Versalar 25000, the Juniper Networks M40, and the Avici TSR platforms as the router interfaces to the Qtera ULTRA.

The Qtera ULTRA system, which will be manufactured at the company's state-of-the-art facility in Boca Raton, Fla., consists of three network elements:

- The ULTRA Optical Gateway, which provides an open interface to high-speed Internet services;

- The ULTRA Optical Terminal, which provides the industry-leading optical add/drop and wavelength management capabilities with 100 percent flexibility at any node in the network; and

- The ULTRA Optical Amplifier, which boosts the signal quality across long-haul routes.

The ULTRA photonic networking system is managed by Q.Vista, an advanced element management system, will seamlessly work with Nortel Networks Preside management system. The ULTRA solution is further enhanced by the Q.Configurator, a network planning and provisioning
software tool designed to make bandwidth provisioning a simple point-and-click task.
