Excellent review of what has happened and what will happen to our beloved EXDS.

I owned both CPQ and DELL in the early part of the corporate life and EXDS is behaving in a similar fashion (both in market growth and split tendency).

Believe EXDS could make us early investors (I invested in Mar. of '99)> $mil in 4 more splits (or 2 years).

Excellent advice and reading. Thanks for the input. Looks like a solid business model, excellent market share, and great growth potential. With another stock split on the way (June?), company seems to be on target right now. But, as Apollo says, need to watch for revenue growth declines.

Thanks for the info.

Service Metrics Expands Its Worldwide
Data Collection Agent Network

Tuesday, March 7, 2000 10:33 AM

Expansion Provides Increased Backbone
Provider Measurements to Growing Subscriber Base

BOULDER, Colo., March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Significantly increasing the scope of its worldwide measurement capabilities, Service Metrics(TM), Inc., an Exodus Communications(TM), Inc. company and leading provider of Web site measurement services, announces the expansion of its worldwide network of Data Collection Agents (DCAs). With the additional DCA measurement systems, ServiceMetrics customers will have access to performance data about their Web sites measured from more than 220 measurement agents on 18 public and private backbones in 23 major metropolitan areas around the world. Strategically placed to measure the leading backbone and hosting provider networks in each geographic location, the data collected by Service Metrics is designed to provide an accurate representation of performance experienced by end users connected to the Internet.

Service Metrics DCAs collect consistency, availability and performance information about URLs and incorporated elements such as graphics, text,
content served by third-party providers, SSL and
JavaScript objects. Service Metrics' DCA network now
covers North America, Europe, Asia and South America, and will continue to expand based on changing Internet populations to continually provide an accurate representation of the end-user experience.

DCA Deployment Strategy

The Service Metrics DCA network includes two types of measurement computers -- backbone agentsand baseline agents. Backbone agents, which comprise 80 percent of the Service Metrics DCA network, are directly connected to the major backbone providers in the largest North American and international population centers. Service Metrics has formed relationships with top backbone providers, enabling the company to connect its DCAs directly within the provider's points of presence (POPs) and/or data centers, providing an accurate measurement of Web site performance across provider networks and their peering relationships. Only the remaining 20 percent is made up of baseline agents. Baseline agents are located in major data centers including such hosting companies as Exodus and GlobalCenter. The purpose is to directly measure Web site performance isolated from external network conditions. Baseline agent deployment enables differentiation between Internet-related issues and Web site or hosting provider issues. Using baseline agent data, Web site problems can be analyzed independent of issues related to Internet traffic.

"Service Metrics measurement services can now enable Exodus-hosted customers to isolate the Exodus network from general Internet-related performance, ensuring its IDC network is performing optimally," said Robert Merlo, vice president of marketing for Service Metrics.

The expanded DCA deployment will allow customers to choose from a variety of DCA groupings to suit their measurement needs. Customers can select measurement data from DCA groups comprising international, regional and metropolitan views or groupings of DCAs for a specific backbone provider. Customers can also choose to develop custom DCA groups to meet their specific market or site traffic demands.

"As a leading hosting provider, Exodus Communications leases massive amounts of bandwidth from major network providers. As a subsidiary of Exodus, we have been able to leverage their relationships with many of these providers to greatly expand our DCA infrastructure," said Merlo. "This expansion will allow our customers to choose the DCA grouping that provides a topologic and geographic Internet view of their Web site that best matches that of their end users."

In addition to providing customers flexible DCA groupings, the Service Metrics DCA network also provides highly scaleable measurement frequencies. Customers can choose to measure their Web site up to 15 times per hour from each DCA, providing near real-time measurements, and may vary the frequency of the measurements based on time of day or day of week. To allow trending analysis from one year to the next, Service Metrics warehouses measurement data for 13 months.

"Our core strategy is to maintain strong coverage of what we see as tier 1 backbones, based on user traffic, as well as measurement coverage of significant tier 2 providers and private data center networks," said Merlo. "To that end, we've developed relationships with over 80 percent of the top backbone providers. Those relationships, combined with Service Metrics' expanded DCA network and high level of scalability, provides our customers with a complete picture of the end-user experience."

The Service Metrics DCA network is the cornerstone to its industry-leading Web measurement solutions. Applications including SM-WEB(TM), SM-SCENARIO(TM), SM-WEBPOINT(TM) and SM-SOURCETRACKER(TM) monitor and report on the consistency, availability and performance of Web sites. These measurement tools provide actionable information to e-businesses based on information gathered by the DCAs. The additional DCAs will give customers more "vantage points" from which to gain a clearer representation of the end-user experience.
