<<GSTRF @ 22! What's up? A dismay news? A raving buy opportunity?>>

Hopefully, some sort of massive capitulation upon which to build a solid base and head upwards; same for Lor. But I've given up trying to guess what drives these stocks. I'll use the certificates to line the linen closet and, if they do take off, they'll still be in good shape.

(Seriously, if I thought they were pungent POS's, I'd take the money and run. But I am past recommending anyone put their hard earned money in either at this point.)

......VVVVVVVVVV (Hangin' in there.)

Merrill Lynch probably wants to avoid the Lehmann trap... they rode Iridium down so far that they actually cancelled their "buy" recommendation *after* Iridium had filed for Chapter 11. That was bad enough - but any investment firm that does a repeat is going to look three times dumber, since now there is a precedent.

On the other hand, there is this Gilder effect that can trigger a Globalstar short squeeze at any moment. The recent run-up to 50 bucks was apparently completely due to the Gilder newsletter... it has amazing power to move up just about any stock, especially when it is coupled with a Forbes article. You can't beat a combo of an internet newsletter widely read by daytraders and one of the most respected business publications around.

It's going to be very interesting to see what Forbes editors do now: will they publish another positive piece after getting burned by the previous "40 million satellite subscribers" articles?

This is by far the most exciting wireless stock around right now... possibly excluding Palm Pilot, which seems to be also poised between sharp upward moves and a gut-wrenching drop. Actually, both companies are betting on beating "normal" mobile handsets - one with superior roaming, another with advanced PDA features. RIMM is the paging challenger that thinks people will keep on using pagers even when phones become as small and better featured.

Is there any room in the future for wireless PDA's, pagers or satellite phones? Or will mobile phones end up devouring the market space for all of these products? I think the answer is the same for all three products.
