Conference miscellaneous:

* private company with more users than Yahoo:
napster.com

* Tensilica, challenging INTC with cheap processors:
tensilica.com

* Start-up mentioned by Vinod Khosla:
broadbandoffice.net

* Random stats: exhibits sold-out at 475; 10,000 registered attendees with 5,000 more expected on-site; technology spending is now 45% of GDP; with bandwidth, when prices drop 2X, revenues increase 2.5X.

* Random quotes: so far broadband predictions have been wrong --- hype is under-hype, not over; network core will be routed, not switched; raw material --- bandwidth --- doubling every 9 months; in terms of growth (pointing to hockey-stick chart), we are milliseconds into the curve.

* Between the lines at SDL: will acquire technologies not just to expand capabilities (passives, for example) but to secure sources; will acquire according to long-range goals --- where they see the industry going and where they see themselves in the process; RAMAN modules, no one else in the industry has certified products, SDL is the leader; hiring every day, growing at rapid rate; expanding public relations to gain brand/product awareness; have all the business they can handle --- not worried about anyone taking business away --- keeping alert to future.

* General impression: management is focused, securing technology with laser-precision, looking ahead so they will be where the industry is going; enormous pride among employees in being part of a quality organization with excellent leadership; management is competitive, will be second to none.

That's it for now.

Pat

Insider Trader indicates there's been some profit-taking by institutions:
insidertrader.com

Some institutions have to lighten up if their holdings exceed a certain percentage of a given company or if the price goes up a given percent. Of those who did decrease their holdings, their current percentage is still quite impressive.

Putnam, Morgan Stanley, and Bowman all increased their positions. Munder Capital took an initial position.

Considering MSDW is a 4.5% owner, it's interesting they didn't push SDL in their recent Optical Networking Report other than a passing mention. Perhaps their researchers don't communicate with their money managers very often. (They decreased their JDSU position by 13.2%, yet named it one of their 5 key recommendations.)

At any rate, MSDW went from holding 2.7% of SDLI to 4.9% or a 77.8% increase.

Now, turning to one of the products mentioned in the MSDW report I posted yesterday, I found the following on "gain blocks":

<<<<
Up to 36 nm Gain Bandwidth
Gain Flatness: 1.0 dB typical
Low Noise Figure: 5.0 dB typical
High Saturation Output Power
Integral Microprocessor Control of Operating Parameters and Alarms
Input and Output Isolation
Single +5V Operation

DWDM Systems

DWDM gain-flattened Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) module.
The SDL-FM20 series Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs) are optimized for use in Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) applications. The standard amplifier, gain-flattened over a 35 nm range, is available in preamplifier, booster and line amplifier configurations.

The amplifier provides dynamic gain control to operate at the point of optimum gain flatness. Composite output power varies in order to maintain a constant per-channel gain over a wide dynamic range of channel loading. Consequently, the FM20 features full forward compatibility.

An integral microprocessor module automatically maintains constant per-channel output power and pump temperatures to predefined levels. RS-232 communication access allows password protected control of key parameters for diagnostics or custom operational requirements. The electrical interface for all signals is provided by one convenient DB-25 connector. System integration for the customer is facilitated by the FM20's compact size, single-rail DC input, low power consumption and wide operating temperature.

SDL manufactures a full line of EDFA modules and gain blocks for high volume OEM sales. Standard products have output powers ranging from +13 dBm to +22 dBm and gain flatness over a 15 nm or 35 nm band. Telemetry channel capability can be customized for your system. Contact SDL for more information.

H&Q just posted a new earnings model for SDLI. When I have time I'll type up some of the key numbers.
