Hello zwolff, > Scott: FWIW I like eguide very much! Hope they will make > it easier to use and install for the average user in > short order. I wonder if they have a good "feedback" link on their web page for users to provide the suggestions? I'll have to look ... but they ought to! Actually, they ought to put a link right on the front of eGuide that is for "Feedback" ... the link would then launch a browser (in a new window!) to a Novell eGuide feedback page. In the background it could even post it to an internal news group for the entire company to be able to see ... ;-) > What do you think of intranets.com? Initially I thought > that digitalme was going to provide this level of > functionality... This looks very cool. These types of sites are popping up everywhere ... the "outsourcing" of applications ... and groupware is a good fit. There is one area that I think will still have a lot of growth and that is in the area of "syncronizing" your "on-line" data with your PDA or laptop ... the ability to get to your data when "disconnected" ... > Also we seem to be getting to the point that intranets > hosted thru the internet are becoming feasible and > potentially very useful for businesses (specially > small/medium)- creating a huge opportunity for > NOVL..right? I agree completely. The explosion in bandwidth is reaching scales that have only been dreamed of. And with that bandwidth are going to be whole news spaces and new types of applications that were never before feasible. I'm currently doing some research on International bandwidth expansion and I am blown away by just how widespread the expansion is! > What could/should be NOVLs role in the development of > hosted intranets? So this is an interesting area ... I keep trying to examine what NOVL might be able to do to expand into this area ... it obviously would take more analysis. They *do* have numerous products which could integrate well though ... 1) BorderManager/ICS PRO: At a minimum these products could be used to accelerate the access to hosted resources with caching. Reverse proxies are very valuable. On top of this, from what I have read in the press, it sounds like the SecureMe product could provide a good security solution for SSL (secure) traffic. CON: I'm guessing that the ICS flavor of their cache would work better since these tend to be Linux shops ... so they might choose to use SQUID on UNIX/Linux instead. 2) NDS PRO: As LDAP servers go, NDS has a lot more background and time in the market. If the sites are looking for a security database, NDS can provide a lot of capabilities for them. CON: Again, due to the "Internet Nature" of things, OpenLDAP might offer a "better" solution in some peoples eyes. It's not quite to where NDS is, but it's growing in popularity. I still believe that directories are going to quickly become a commodity market. 3) NetWare PRO: NetWare still is one of the most incredible storage servers in the world. It scales tremendously, is very cost competitive, and supports most of the common file access protocols. CON: People seem to still be confused about this "specialty" space. They don't seem to like the fact they might have to install a "proprietary" storage system ... and Novell doesn't seem to be trying to orient this product towards the space. I'll have to think about this more ... been busy lately ... ;-) Scott C. Lemon
