Wayne,

SelectNet was invented to minimize phone contact between market making and order entry firms. And, I think that it's awful hard at times to separate allegedly collusive behavior from what most of us trading on a direct access (even online) basis try to do all the time - follow the leader. What may look like aggregate, manipulative activity may indeed be so, but may also be a market response to a single dealer stepping up on the box and providing directional leadership. Same thing when spreads were wide. Narrow them down, and see what happens to your business - which THRIVES on order flow.

You say they take the other side at SOME price, not necessarily a good price. Well, when it's your capital, you can decide where you want to full someone elses' retail order, too. It's not a government cheese service, it's a business. On the old phone codes, I don't know about the rough sea - that may well have been one - but am far more familiar with the "what's for lunch" routines reported by the SEC in the past.
