Intel Gives Free Computers and Internet Access to Employees...FYI...

<<Tuesday March 7, 4:23 pm Eastern Time

Intel to give all employees free PCs at home

SAN FRANCISCO, March 7 (Reuters) - Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - news), the world's largest computer chip maker, said it is starting a program to offer personal computers, Internet access and services for free to all its over 70,000 full-time and part-time employees.

Intel's move to give free personal computers to its employees follows the actions by Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F - news), Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE:DAL - news) and American Airlines' part AMR Corp. (NYSE:AMR - news), all of which have announced plans in the past month to give employees free or subsidized PCs with Internet access at home.

``We want our employees and their families to participate fully in the Internet revolution,' said Craig Barrett, Intel's president and chief executive, in a statement. ``We see these employer-based programs as a positive trend illustrating the importance of technology literacy to us all.'

Intel said it is just now seeking bids from computer makers and Internet service providers, so it does not yet have an estimate on how much the program will cost.

``Our attitude when we first saw the Ford announcement was that's a great idea. Why can't we do that?' said Chuck Mulloy, a spokesman for the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company.

The company plans to start delivering the PCs to its employees sometime in the third quarter, possibly in early July. An Intel spokesman said the company plans to give its employees high performance PCs, with Pentium III processors running at clock speeds of 667 megahertz.

``They are pretty richly configured,' Mulloy said. He said that Intel plans to offer PCs with a 20 gigabyte hard drive, 128 megabytes of memory, a printer, speakers, unlimited Internet access, office productivity software and the choice of one Intel Play product that it developed with Mattel Inc. (NYSE:MAT - news).

Intel said the program is an ongoing offer and that employees can get product upgrades every three years. Employees also have the option to upgrade their systems.

Mulloy also noted that the motivation to give PCs is not for employees to do work at home.

``This is for the employee and the employee's family,' Mulloy said. ``It's an attractive benefit to employees ... If you want to telecommute, we have laptops.'>>

Hmmmm......Will Intel select 'the right computers' for their employees <G>..?? DELL has been an incredibly loyal client and IMO they deserve the business.

Best Regards,

Scott
