Caliper Announces Issuance of Fifth Pioneering Microfluidic Patent
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Caliper Technologies Corp. (Nasdaq: CALP - news) today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued a broad patent covering fundamental microfluidic chip technology to the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This patent joins four other issued patents on technology developed by Dr. J. Michael Ramsey of Oak Ridge that together establish broad coverage for precisely controlling the flow of materials in microfluidic networks. Caliper holds an exclusive commercial license in a broadly defined field to all of these patents from Oak Ridge, subject to government use rights.
The newly issued patent, U.S. Patent 6,033,546, entitled, ``Apparatus and Method for Performing Manipulations for Chemical Analysis and Synthesis,' contains 112 claims that broadly cover microfluidic devices or chips that achieve precise manipulation of fluids and other materials within microfluidic channel networks. Such precision is critical to effective application of microfluidic technology to a wide range of high value applications such as genetic analysis (DNA sequencing and SNP genotyping), pharmaceutical drug screening, and clinical diagnostics.

``The issuance of this fifth Ramsey patent provides important added breadth and depth to our substantial microfluidic patent estate,' said Dan Kisner, M.D., Caliper's President and Chief Executive Officer. ``We believe that strengthening our patent portfolio is an important competitive and commercial strategy, and that broadening our ownership position in microfluidic technology will continue to add significant value to our company.'

Caliper's patent portfolio derives from Caliper's own innovation as well as inventions exclusively licensed to Caliper from other microfluidic technology leaders. Caliper's patent estate today includes 48 issued U.S. patents on microfluidic technology.

Caliper Technologies Corp. is a leader in lab-on-a-chip technology. Caliper designs, manufactures, and commercializes LabChip© devices and systems that enable experiments that ordinarily require laboratories full of equipment and people to be conducted on a chip small enough to fit in the palm of a child's hand. The chip contains a network of microscopic channels through which fluids and chemicals are moved in order to perform the experiment. The LabChip© system is designed to streamline and accelerate laboratory experimentation and has potential applicability in a broad range of industries including pharmaceuticals, agriculture, chemicals and diagnostics. Caliper has established multiple strategic and commercial alliances and has built a leading intellectual property estate in microfluidic technology.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is a multi-program research facility managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.

Actual results may differ materially from those discussed herein. In particular, the foregoing discussion of the effect of patents issued involves risks and uncertainty, including the risks: that third parties may be successful in challenging the patents; or that granted claims may be held invalid or interpreted differently by a court of law; or that new technologies will be developed that are superior in conducting the experimentation performed by Caliper's LabChip© products. These and other risks related to Caliper are detailed in Caliper's Prospectus filed with the SEC dated December 14, 1999.
