El PC shipments forecasted to rise 20 percent in Q1 NEW YORK, March 7 (Reuters) - Personal computer unit shipments are expected to grow by 20 percent in the first quarter of 2000, compared to the same period of 1999, market research firm International Data Corp said on Tuesday. First-quarter PC sales in the Asia/Pacific region and Japan should be 32 percent above year-ago levels. In the United states, first-quarter growth should reach 20 percent as the supply of chips and memory increases. IDC said in a report that Western Europe's growth was forecast at 10.9 percent. ``With Y2K fears largely over and the introduction of Microsoft's Windows 2000, businesses will start picking up the pace of upgrades,' said John Brown, research director of IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. ``IDC expects the commercial market to show more robust growth this year than last, starting with a pickup in demand this quarter.' Shipments in the first quarter of the year, a traditionally slow period, should be down 9 percent from the last quarter of 1999, IDC said. In the fourth quarter of 1999, Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news) was the world's largest PC vendor, the report said. Dell Computer Corp. (NasdaqNM:DELL - news) was second, International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM - news) third, and Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HWP - news) fourth. The annual rankings were the same as the quarterly ones, the report said.
