price of Brent crude oil rose above $30 a barrel and the price
of light sweet crude oil moved above $33 for the first time
since the Gulf War of the early 1990s. Leading oil stocks
gained ground on the news, as Exxon-Mobil (NYSE:XOM) surged
11.05% (up 8 1/16) to 81, BP Amoco (NYSE:BPA) jumping 7.28% (up
3 7/16) to 50 5/8, Chevron (NYSE:CHV) rising 10.81% (up 8) to
82, and Texaco (NYSE:TX) adding 8.18% (up 3 13/16) to 50 7/16.
Meanwhile, oil services stocks also performed well, with
Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB) gaining 6.22% (up 4 13/16) to 82 3/16,
Halliburton (NYSE:HAL) rising 7.88% (up 3 1/4) to 44 1/2,
Global Marine (NYSE:GLM) moving up 6.58% (up 1 5/8) to 26 5/16,
and Noble Drilling (NYSE:NE) adding 3.09% (up 1 1/4) to 41
