More on data. I just learned that you can hook a laptop directly up to the G* car kit. You can obviously do it on fixed sites too. I forgot to ask about going from a laptop to the phone but I suspect that will be doable.

Hi, Dennis. Further on your points about the usefulness of 9600 baud rate--The WAP consortium, and Phone.com etc. are developing a lengthy value chain of content providers, of material specifically designed for the little-bitty screens that cell phones have. I would expect any G* "internet" capability to be able to access these sites.

Also, the (good) point has been made that bandwidth is largely useless if the target is a cell phone. The phones don't have the memory to retain a whole lot of information. And the little screens can't handle a lot of information.

I realize that if the target is a laptop, things change. But, for a lot of uses (eg., stock quotes, email, etc.) people will be using phones "on the run", not sitting down with their laptops.

Best,
John

Dennis,

They told me they had to run 400 feet of coax from the car kit up a roof support and horizonal to an antenna on the roof of the convention center. The car kit wasn't designed to work with a 400 foot coax run, but it worked anyway.

They must have used some VERY low-loss coax!

John
