Jay, Sanyo's MO drive uses 50mm (2") media. With the exception of its large capacity, it has all the problems of Iomega's Clik! drive (size, height, shock damage, etc.) but in a far larger form factor. Sanyo is pumping MO as a standard media for exchange but the idea of paying $20 for MO disks instead of simply copying data to $1 CDs boggles my brain.

Total cost comparisons are futile since it is hard to imagine "Joe Camera" needing to store 500 megapixel images (or even wanting to if they could -- oops ... the dog just ate 2001 thru 2003!) A 64 or 128MB CF card will do everything the MO drive can, at equal cost, and in a smaller and more reliable package.

On the other hand, their forthcoming "blue laser" version with 3+GB capacity makes a lot of sense for recording almost an hour of full-motion video at a reasonable resolution. IMHO, it will find a home in Digital Handicams rather than still cameras -- assuming that one of the other optical storage innovators doesn't beat them to it.

What impressed me most is Sanyo's product list and industry connections (they apparently manufacture digicams for some major players!). Just a thought but SNDK's market cap is such that they could buy Sanyo, sell off some divisions (like the one that makes refrigerators!), and create a concentrated "new generation" powerhouse.
