"Gateway sure seems to be sticking it DRY to INTC as of late.."

Gateway's homepage looks like an ad for AMD, highlighting the "world's first 1GHz microprocessor" and offering a 650 Athlon powered PC at the same price as an identical PC with a 550 PII. If Intel treats Gateway poorly in terms of allocation of the PIII 1GHz, it will only further cement the growing relationship between Gateway and AMD. In my mind, this is one of the most significant, and underappreciated developments for AMD. If AMD becomes to Gateway what Intel is to Dell, AMD is going to have a fantastic 2000 and its share price is truly undervalued. And if Gateways profits zoom due to this relationship and Dell continues to miss out on its full earnings potential due to Intel's missteps, the pressure on Dell to adopt AMD as a second vendor may become too great to resist.

The dynamics are changing. The Athlon is a wedge between the natural alliance (or maybe more accurately the dependency) of the major PC OEMs and Intel. Gateway has quite a strong motivation now to promote the Athlon's better mix of performance and price for the corporate sector in order to undercut Dell's leadership. What does it have to lose by loading W2K on Athlon PCs? Intel has already signalled that it is a less worthy OEM than Dell and HP.
