TigerPaw,
Although JDSU pretty much drifted downward all day, it dropped quickly around 4:30 this afternoon and recovered most of this drop a few minutes later. The approximately 18-pt drop in JDSU in a 15-minute period around 4:30 this afternoon does not appear to have been driven by any large sellers. Looking at the 1-minute prices and volumes--about 10,000 shares were traded each minute. Funds and institutions usually move in large blocks, 10,000 shares would be a small sale for them. Multiple 20,000 share blocks are more typical. So I conclude that the big drop was a panic in sellers, mostly small ones. In the next 15-minute period, volume was about the same, most of the loss of the preceding 15-minute period was erased, and I saw several blocks of around 6,000 shares go through. I don't see any correlation with CSCO slipage. CSCO pretty much moved downward all day long. The big JDSU drop began when the price hit 290. It may be that stop loss orders at that price accelerated the decline.

Something strange happened today. I wonder if anyone here could shed some light on it.

I had thought that the sharp dip & rise in JDSU today was a reflection of the overall market. But it clearly was not. Take a look at an intraday chart of SDLI, and compare it to JDSU, and then GLW.

SDLI made a similar dip and recovery, but a 2pm. JDSU did it at 3:30. And then GLW did it at 3:45 and did not recover. Any ideas? Did any other stocks do this today?

Personally, I hate conspiracy theories. But the only idea I can come up with is that someone was testing the strength of these stocks.
