Mark:

What a great story!
Thank you so much for sharing it.

When I was a teenager, I worked in a residential
care facility for the severely retarded. My job was
basically to entertain the patients who were ambulatory and not as impaired as the majority of the patients. THere were a few who were educably retarded and even attended classes at a local high school. Two of the girls were spastic and very difficult to understand at first. Ultimately, I could converse with them and we talked about school, etc.

We played games, I taught them songs, and we did crafts.

I learned a lot from that experience. THere were quite a few staff members who had not reached perfection.

It's also funny how children or younger people can somehow cope with the disabled better. My dad really wanted to come and volunteer to help with the children. I had brought one home for dinner and taken another to Disneyland with a couple of the orderlies. But my dad just couldn't do it because he ended up crying everytime he walked in the door.

Only time I ever saw him cry.

In retrospect, I don't know how I did it.
It makes me cry now.

M
