VerticalNet (ICGE Partner co) to Buy Tradeum for About $500 Million

HORSHAM, Pa. (Reuters) - VerticalNet Inc. (NasdaqNM:VERT - news), said on Wednesday it would buy privately held Internet company Tradeum Inc. for around $500 million in stock, in a move to strengthen its position as a leading provider of online market places for industrial goods and services.

VerticalNet, which is based in Horsham, Pa., said it would issue about 2 million shares for the acquisition of San Francisco-based Tradeum. The deal, which VerticalNet will account for as a purchase, is valued at around $500 million, based on VerticalNet's stock price of $249 on Wednesday morning.

Tradeum, which creates technology for Internet-based market places for businesses, will help VerticalNet to speed up the development of exchanges for goods and services, VerticalNet said in a statement.

Investor demand for so-called business-to-business (B2B) Internet companies is red hot, and these companies now are using their highly valued stock to acquire software and support firms.

Web venture firm Internet Capital Group Inc.

(NasdaqNM:ICGE - news) earlier on Wednesday announced it would buy a majority stake in software firm RightWorks for $657 million in stock and cash, in a bid to maintain its position as one of the leading B2B companies.
