[World DRAM Price] 64Mb DRAM Chip Prices Still Declining
March 8, 2000 (TOKYO) -- The prices of 64Mb DRAMs are continuing to decline. The significant fall in the spot prices are widening the price gap between contract and spot prices.

According to a worldwide survey conducted by ICIS-LOR, which is based in London, Houston, and Singapore, the 30-day (Jan. 20 - Feb. 18, 2000) rolling average prices for 64Mb DRAM microchips (PC100, 8M x 8) for large users were US$7.97 in North America, US$8.27 in Europe, and US$8.39 in Asia. Compared with the previous week's 30-day rolling averages up to Feb. 11, 2000, the prices declined by 5.29 percent in North America, by 7.59 percent in Europe, and 7.48 percent in Asia.

Regarding prices for memory modules, the spot price for 64MB dual inline memory modules (DIMMs, PC100) fell 8.82 percent from the previous week to US$52.43 in North America. Also, it declined 8.52 percent to US$53.14 in Europe and 7.94 percent to US$51.51 in Asia.

The drop in 64Mb DRAM spot prices is widening, showing a more than 8-percent fall in each of the three major markets. However, the daily spot price has turned around. Supply adjustments appear to be taking effect.

Gottfried and Threaders, Following are the DW Weekly bull
percentages of the Sectors, the Market (NYSE % OTC and the
Leading Indicators (OPTIONS, 10WEEK, HI/LO'S & 30 WEEK). Two
of the Short term Leading indicators of Tom Dorsey's three
legged stool, Hi/Lo and Options) are in a column of "X"'s.
Note, that the DW highest sectors are Semi's, Biogenetic,
Telephone, Software, Electronics, Drug, Oils and Computers.
The OTC is at a Double top of "x"s at 54%, however, the NYSE
is at a double bottom of "O"'s at 32. The Wallstreet sector
has moved up to the 50% level from the 38% last week.

IMO, we see that the techie's, biogenetics, drugs and oil
service sectors is driving this market while the interest
sensitive sectors (real estate, savings and loan, banks,
textiles/apparel, precious metals, Non Air Transportation
related to Oil, and Steel/Iron) are at or below the 30%
level. Will these sectors move up without a lowering of
interest rates or not is the question? And, what impact will
interest rate increases have on the sectors and the whole
market. Should be interesting.

Your opinions are appreciated.

Naturally, the above is only my opinions and the data which I
have reviewed from the Dorsey Wright site, IBD and SEMI
sites. Readers are reminded the old saving, "caveat emptor
(buyer/reader beware)."

Bringing light to its knees
explorezone.com . 02.29.00

Maybe time can't stand still, but researchers have brought light to its knees, recently slowing it to a 1 mph crawl.

One year ago, Harvard's Lene Verstergaard Hau used a special medium known as a Bose Einstein condensate to slow light to 17 m/sec (38 mph). The process works by forcing an extremely abrupt refraction in the light as it enters the medium. Now Hau and her colleagues have slowed the light further, to a speed of 1 mph.

Hau said that if the velocity could be slowed still more it might be possible to get atoms to surf on the front of the light pulse. She believes that if the approach can be simplified, it would lead to highly sensitive light switches and low-power nonlinear optics.

The work was discussed recently at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and appears in the Feb. 24 issue of the American Institute of Physics Bulletin of Physics News. ez
