Mike,

I believe in a free market. I grew up in a state-controlled economy where the GOvt. decided what productive use of capital is. I have seen first hand what lack of freedom to use one's resources (including economic) can do to one country. It is not a pretty picture, trust me.

Free markets make mistakes, too. But, I believe that they are best system (like democracy) that has been deviced so far. In addition to the boom-bust cycles that you have mentioned, free markets also provided the initial capital for AOL, one of the most successful American companies of the decade, whose situation in the mid 90's was no better than that of AMZN today.

If you think that central governance of an economy has a better track record vis-a-vis free markets, I would like to see some examples.
