And I'd love to see the cdma2000 consortium try to come up with 3G handsets against the competition from Nokia and Ericsson. The third generation handsets will have to offer GSM compatibility - they will have to operate in both old GSM netwroks and new 3G networks.

That is something that Nokia will not do without QCOM ASICs. 3G means CDMA. Nokia can't build a handset capable of taking advantage of 3G. They can barely build a handset that works in IS95A. W-CDMA (Spread Spectrum CDMA) is NOT an upgrade to GSM. It is a brand new overlay. Just because a handset is GSM compatible, doesn't mean squat for its ability to function on a 3G network.

This is why Tero should be ignored. He has a basic lack of understanding of the upgrade path for GSM. He writes well though.

BTW, a CDMA2000 implementation in Europe for 3G would cost no more than the so called W-CDMA. Each one would require the same amount of new infrastructure. The big difference is that CDMA2000 actually works.

RE CDMA 2000 Finland, In NOK's backyard. Seems like Q should consider a equity position, Lu or Nortel can assist with some vendor financing. I believe Q set aside over 1 BILL last fall for these type of projects. I dont think any 3 G will be up until 2002 or 2003 and maybe later as Jacobs said yesterday. Depending on when they want to build the network the might consider IS-95/ HDR and migrate to 3G. Seems like
Serveri has thrown out a baited hook.

<<Personally, I wish they would grant one license for cdma2000, even if that cuts the number of licenses to three. It would shut up Charlene for a week or two, which would be a blessing in and of itself. And it would give us a chance to observe how well cdma2000 and W-CDMA would perform in a GSM market. It would be nice to see marketplace decide the competition for the GSM upgrade system. >>

Can you imagine a QCOM proponent whining because some other technology might win a license? Either you believe in free markets or you don't.
