But one analyst said any German bid was likely to have been exploratory,
noting that U.S. fund managers were wary of accepting Deutsche
Telekom's shares which have risen by almost 50 percent this year alone.

"U.S. fund managers do not like Telekom paper," he said. "They think it's
screamingly overvalued. I'm hearing that on a $100 billion deal, 25
percent needs to be cash."

An industry source also played down the imminence of any deal by
Telekom, saying: "If there is a deal to be done, it's some way off."
