A bit rash to make such conclusions from one probably stressed out marketing guy, eh? But I would complain about his attitude for sure. We don't need that kind of thing around here.

Bit of a rush today folks. Got dicey, but the troops come in at the end. I wonder who was selling today.

It appears as if most of the regular G* and QCOM folks are still in San Diego...on their way home. It was a great meeting. Jacobs and company were VERY positive about G*. It is an important part of their future vision.

I believe G* makes essentially no margin on the sale of phones, only on their use, so the company and s/h are motivated to have them as cheap as possible. OTH, we want them to be in the hands of people that need and can afford to use lots of air time, and we want the manufacturers and resellers to be incentivized, so it's not that easy to choose an optimum price point.

I think it's indisputable that the phone at present prices offers a better value than any comparable product from Iridium, Inmarsat, etc.

Tens of thousands of users that are well known to many of G*'s distributors, have been paying 2-5X as much for a product that is heavier, less portable and more difficult to use and has poorer voice quality, to boot.

Certainly to get 100K's of users, let alone millions, prices will have to come down (as will per unit manufacturing costs, with economies of scale) the question is how fast to bring them down, and how.

I don't have a big problem with publishing 1500$ MSRP, and working downward from there on the basis of discounts to early adopters, volume buyers, Iridium/Inmarsat trade ins, etc, and I suspect a lot of such deals are being cut as we speak.

I too think you leaped to a conclusion based on a lack of information from the person you spoke with. G* was called today about the information in my earlier post about 850,000 villages in India and India's intent to provide a phone in every village in the nation. A marketing person assured the caller that G* is definitely aware of India's intent and that they are indeed pursuing business with India.
