Hi Kemble, Here is an update from the last article! :)Leigh

"Intel's 1GHz Pentium III will cost $990 when bought in lots
of 1,000, compared with $1,299 for AMD's 1GHz Athlon. PCs that use the chips can cost as much as $6,000. Intel says its chip is 15 percent more powerful than the next-fastest processor now on the market."

Intel Unveils 1GHz Pentium III, Catches Up With AMD (Update2)
By Molly Williams

Santa Clara, California, March 8 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp.,
the world's largest maker of computer chips, unveiled a Pentium III running at 1 gigahertz, two days after archrival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. beat it to the important benchmark.

Intel's 1GHz Pentium III performs better than AMD's 1GHz
Athlon because Intel's product has cache memory designed onto the chip, rather than as a separate chip alongside it, Intel said.

AMD trumped Intel by being first to ship a 1GHz product,
winning the latest round in the companies' fight to have the
fastest chip on the market. For the first time in years, Intel is facing competition from AMD in almost every part of the chip market, from low-cost home PCs to faster corporate desktops.``AMD is not as far behind Intel as it used to be,' said Dataquest Inc. analyst Martin Reynolds. ``For both of these companies, 1 gigahertz is a stunning achievement.'

A chip running at 1GHz can process 1 billion cycles per second.

AMD shares fell 1/2 to 52 1/8 on the New York Stock Exchange. Before today, it had surged 33 percent since Friday. Intel fell 13/16 to 114 15/16, and has tumbled 3.6 percent since Friday.

Cheaper than AMD

Intel's 1GHz Pentium III will cost $990 when bought in lots
of 1,000, compared with $1,299 for AMD's 1GHz Athlon. PCs that use the chips can cost as much as $6,000. Intel says its chip is 15 percent more powerful than the next-fastest processor now on the market.

Most users don't need such zippy processors because word
processing and Web browsing don't require that much speed, so the chips will be sold mostly to users who play games or use photo or video applications. Reynolds said the two companies combined will probably ship only about 1 million of the 1GHz chips in the first half, out of a total of as many as 60 million processors.

Intel's processors are found in about 85 percent of the
world's personal computers, compared with about 15 percent for AMD.

Hewlett-Packard Co. said it will start selling a Pavilion
home PC with the 1GHz Pentium III that will cost about $3,499. The machine is expected to be available next week.

Dell Computer Corp. also introduced a new PC with the
speedier Pentium III. Dell's Special Edition Dell Dimension will sell for about $5,999.

Compaq Computer Corp. and Gateway Inc. are selling machines
with AMD's 1GHz Athlon chip, with prices starting at $2,499.
