Rambus is as troubled a technology as is the IBM/Moto thing. I believe that Apple is leaning towards DDR but I'm not certain.

The Athlon 1Ghz chip was delivered EARLY! God knows where AMD will be in the fall if they keep up with this.

I've found that I saved the FPU comparison table that was on a page linked from Apple last summer. Actually the G4 fared better than I remembered. PIIIs get stomped by both the Athlon and the PPC chips. I've posted the gif image:

A rough estimate of the SPECfp_95 performance of a 1Ghz Athlon would be somewhere between 33 and 36 on this graph. That's very roughly about 50% better than a 500Mhz PPC. Of course this doesn't take into account AltiVec.

There is more trouble for Apple in the professional area on the horizon. As far as I can tell there are no software packages for WAP/WML. In my opinion this technology will be extremely important in the coming years to web designers. Apple users are also at a disadvantage when it come to other software coding technology such as ASP and JAVA. Web design is a core professional area for Apple. If the web designers abandon Apple then there will be less and less content available that works on a Mac. Pretty soon we'll be back in the orphanage.

It looks more and more like Apple will have to do something drastic in the professional area.

I think Jobs must be steaming right about now. My guess is still that OSX will be ported but according to MacOS Rumors, Apple is testing a Powerbook with a Transmeta chip. Maybe Apple is considering a partnership with Transmeta. Might make sense to have a somewhat slower machine that will run multiple OSs. Makes more sense in light of the coming digital phone revolution since the transmeta chip will probably run the EPOC OS and therefor would be very handy for WAP/WHL development. Somewhat ironic for those of us who remember CHRP. Hmm, Linus works at Transmeta, OSX is UNIX based.

That might just work. A somewhat slower but more versatile computer that could run not only the legacy Mac OS but also OSX, Linux, Windows and EPOC. Come to think of it the dang thing could probably run the Sony Playstation OS, Windows CE and the PalmOS too. That Might be handy. The little chip would also be great in portables due to its tiny energy requirements and heat dissipation.
