What I'm concerned about is that Intel priced its 1 Ghz chips at $300 below AMD's.

The $999 only buys you a CPU license from Intel. The CPU still belongs to Intel. They can take it back at any time for roadshows, conferences or to lend it to someone else. Intel estimates they may sell 5 licenses for each CPU they actually make. Environmentalists hailed the new technique as ecologically advantageous.
