NOVELL'S NETWARE 5 MARKET SHARE RISES 5%
TO 55% IN 1999

(The following is a reformatted version of an electronic mail press
release issued by Novell Netware.)

NOVELL NETWARE SALES CONTINUE TO GROW IN A BUOYANT
EUROPEAN NOS MARKET
NETWARE 5.X GROWS 77 TIMES FASTER THAN THE MARKET

London, March 8 -- Data to be released next month from IDC confirms
that NetWare outperformed all the competition including Microsoft Windows
NT for all recorded node shipments last year. Overall the increased
importance of NetWare 5 resulted in a market share increase of 50% in
1998 to 55% in 1999 (IDC, 2000). In addition, IDC confirms that average
nodes shipped per license is actually 84% higher with NetWare (35) when
compared with Windows NT (19).

Elis Nemes, vice president, Novell EMEA said, ``The growth in
NetWare has been significant because our customers are moving their
businesses to one Net. As customers expose their business to the Net,
they expect to have robust, scaleable and secure platforms. Novell
secures and powers one Net environments and its Net services provide
organisations with the power to change by adapting and accelerating their
transformation to e-business. As Novell NetWare has a first class
reputation in all of these areas we are seeing significant growth in
NetWare sales. Our customers are serious about using their networks for
web based applications, directories and management.'

The significance of operating systems other than NetWare and Windows
NT continues to decline and has fallen to a combined total of 5% of all
licenses shipped last year. For 2000, IDC expects continued growth in the
NOS market in Western Europe. This growth will be primarily driven by the
launch of projects that were postponed because of Y2K.

Earlier this month to promote NetWare 5.1, Novell launched an e-
business initiative in Europe, Middle East and Africa. This initiative,
sponsored in conjunction with IBM will include seminars in 90 cities over
the next few months. Interested customers can register at

Pim Bilderbeek, vice president of European Network Research, IDC
said, ``Scalable directories, web-based application platforms, and robust
server operating systems are crucial to companies running mission-
critical e-business networks. This is all included with NetWare 5.1.
That's a compelling message.'

Even with a NOS market that grew 8% in license shipments and 13 % in
node shipments in 1999, Novell expects the introduction of NetWare 5.1 to
continue the growth of NetWare 5.x faster than the overall European NOS
market.

Novell needs to get the ball rolling on it's community products and services. They may be missing a HUGE opportunity to gain a leadership position in the next wave of the Internet.

If Novell were to develop a product and/or services platform for their current Corporate customers to transform their market into e-communities - this company could really FLY.

Peter J Strifas
